Lumbinī is a Buddha holy place. According to the Buddhist history,
the Siddhārtha prince was born in Lumbinī in 563 BC. Queen Mahadevi was
considered as his mother. Later on, the royal prince gave up the luxurious and
sufficient life in his palace. He realized that, the life is impermanent;
anybody was born in this world, and gradually got old age, sickness, and death.
Thus, he became the ascetic monk, and started to sit meditation under the Bodhi
tree. Finally, we call him as the Enlightened One.
Lumbinī now belongs to Nepalese country, and is considered as one
of the four holy places of the Buddha. After the Buddha’s passing away, the
great king Aśoka visited this place, and he gave the permission to his
ministers for making the pillar in this area as the memory to the Buddha. The pillar
was placed at the site in Lumbinī circa 245 BC; and Lumbinī located in the Rupandehi
District of Nepal. Of course, Lumbinī was recognized as a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO in 1997.
